Birds!

Today the birds started to turn up - it brought me a lot of entertainment - so glad I bought the bird feeder. So far a robin, bluetit and sparrow - I am hoping that the word will spread and more will come over the next few days.

Do you know what a mast year is? No nor did I until today. Every few years forest trees like oak and beech produce a bumper crop of seeds/nuts - and this year is a mast year. The theory is that it is weather related - the right combination of rain and sun in spring. Why do they do it - the theory is that the trees produce more food than any of the animals and birds that eat the seeds can possibly eat - meaning that more seeds are likely to germinate.
