Saturday 19th August 2023

Up early to get the train back from Greenwich ready for the start of our two day pilgrimage in Alfriston which starts at 11am! Alfritson is one of the first stops on the South Downs way and it is a lovely village - will definitely come back to spend more time here. The first day was a 6 mile circular walk - which was great. We stopped at a beautiful small church - the Church of the Good Shepherd at Lullington. Then onto Wilmington church which has this wonderful old yew tree outside - apparently it is about 1600 years old - centuries older than the church! We walked past the long man - and speculated for ages about how old it was and why it was there - there are all sorts of stories but noone knows - as you can see though you can see it best from far away. Back to Alfriston where we had a great meal and then settled down the the Old Chapel to sleep - 15 of us in one room - I had ear plugs and had a great nights sleep - Robin said there was a lot of snoring!! And as a highlight to the day late in the afternoon - the Red Arrows flew over!!
