Wednesday 15th February 2023

In the afternoon I went up to Coates Farm with a few other students to meet up with some people from the Forestry Research team. The RAU has a plantation of trees at Coates Farm and they are doing some dendrochronology tests on them. Effectively they are drilling a small hole in each tree, taking out a core of wood which they will then take away to better understand how the trees grow in different weather. The aim is to understand which types of trees grow better in which areas with climate change accelerating. It wasnt very cheerful - basically we should have planted the trees a few decades ago if we wanted them to make a difference for new zero by 2050. The only way that it can work now is if we plant them in good agricultural land - you can see the problem!

In the evening we went to the Corinium museum and watched a jazz performance next to the Roman mosaics - it was quite an experience!
