It was a pretty miserable day so I thought the bat survey might be called oof - but no its going ahead. This time it is back to the seminary near Guildford for a transact survey - my first one. You take your bat monitor and walk a route that has about 8 stops on it. As you walk you are listening for bats and at each stop you wait 5 minutes and then record all the bats that you have heard and seen. Easy? Well no because you start as the sun goes down and most of it is done in the pitch back (cant use a torch for most of it as bats dont like the light!) The seminary has a big estate consisting of fields and woods plus the big building - the woods were the trickiest parts as you cant see the paths and it was very steep in places - but managed to survive OK! Not many bats which again is a bit disappointing as the habitat was pretty good for them. But the light drizzle and rainy showers might have put them off! Glad and slightly damp when it was all over - got back home at 00:30!
