Bat droppings

Our Ecological Consulting lecture today was extended so that we could conduct a bat survey on the campus for one of our assignments. It was really interesting and we found bat droppings in one of the small sheds in the arboretum. I definitely learned a lot, most of the

course material focuses on whether there are suitable roost sites and access points, as well as the surrounding habitat. Our lecturer reminded us on several occasions that we also need to think whether the bat would actually want to roost there. Obvious but easy to get carried away with the tick list and forget that bats won't like a single skinned metal structure that heats up and cools down fast! Or a hole in a tree that points down and collects water. Fascinating afternoon.
