Sunday 17th March 2024
We put all our torches and fiery pieces together in the cart and dragged it through the town and over the bridge to the start of the Carnaval. We were leading the way!! Our theme was cricket (although everyone was wearing bonfire smuggler jumpers, including all our French twinning friends!! But we needed to show some cricket going on, so I dressed up in pads and gloves and took to the stumps to show the French how it is done! Being very careful not to actually hit anyone or anything!! Then we were off, torches lit, firecrackers going and pads on (for me anyway!). The procession was 2 hours through the town and the place was packed - I wasnt sure what to expect but it wasnt quite so many people! The firecrackers made the children cry and the dogs bark - that what bonfire is all about!! It wodul have been better if it was dark - but the torches still looked good. Robin drew the short straw and was at the back pulling the cart full of left over burning torches that were picked up along the way - I have never seen him so hot at the end - it was blazing!! Lots of others groups were processing as well - not sure many of them actually had an Olympic theme. It was a great time!! At the end it was about 7pm on Sunday in France - and almost nowhere was open - we eventually found a place that served us Croque Monsieur, and were rapidly joined by the rest of the gang!!
