We went over to Ullenwood to load up a charcoal kiln. Fill it full of wood - sounds easy? Different sizes and sorts of wood are needed to make the stack and the burn work properly. Not all wood is good wood! And recognising what can be used and what should be thrown away took a bit of learning. It took 10 of us about 3 hours to get this done - actually not bad. I got to split some logs - think I need more practice at that! We will light it early tomorrow - it should make up to 40kg of charcoal, Ed has a customer for it already - in fact we will probably need to do another one before my placement is finished. Its a small money earner for them, every little counts.
We also baked bread over a small fire that we built - it worked quite well - we are doing it again on Friday for some customers, we learnt a few things that we can do differently. I hadn't put enough salt in and we thought we would add wild garlic to the dough and turn it into garlic bread - sounds like a plan!
