This afternoon we were set our next assignment. It is a timed test of 4 questions, we have until next Thursday to submit. In that time I have 1.5 days of face to face courses - first aid and manual handling and need to submit two other assignments. Time management is the key to university success!
The first question is 'Compare the 'shallow ecology' and 'deep ecology' approaches to valuing biodiversity. Deep ecology was proposed by Naess in 1972 and shallow ecology by Weston. The main difference is summed up in the diagram (which we can presume was from a deep ecologist!). Shallow ecology suggests that human interests are the most important, ie nature is here for us. Deep ecology suggests that humans are equal to other organisms in the global ecosystem. Neither is a practical view - but both are interesting views. Amazing what you learn.
