We drove over to Lowther Castle today, there has been a building there for a thousand years but the current castle was built in the early 1800s. As with so many large estates the family ran out of money by the Second World War. What they did was quite unique. They took the roof off the building and aimed to conserve what was there rather than try to restore it. It is a wonderful place, with excellent planting in the old house and an ongoing plan to restore the garden. We will go back over the next few years to see how it is going.
The reason it came to my attention is the move to regenerative agriculture on the estate. https://lowthercastle.org/wilding/lowther-estate/ They are calling it the Knepp of the North. Lots of great work going on there, including beaver introductions last year. Glenn and Dragonfly (!!) are happy building dams and will hopefully have a family soon!
