Sarria

Wednesday 22nd June 2022 Day 32

It had threatened to rain but actually it was a beautiful misty cool walk out of Triacastela to Sarria. There were two different ways to go and we took the shorter but hillier option. It was so peaceful, we didn’t see anyone for ages. We came across this lovely shell reflected in the pool in front of it in the forest. Then up to the top and some great views.

We knew it would be some time before we found our first coffee of the morning but it did seem like ages then suddenly we came across this amazing hippy donativo. Take what you want and donate what you can. A banana and date made me feel much better.

Later we came to the promised cafe. It was a bit odd but I had a coffee and Kit Kat. This was on the way to the decidedly unclean toilets.

Not long after we passed a local cafe and wished we had waited but you just can’t tell what’s coming up on the Camino! We had a lovely walk through a temperate rainforest, we looked it up to be sure! Then onwards to Sarria. This is where lots of pilgrims and groups start so we were warned that it would be very different from now on.

But first the long staircase into the old town. We met Ines, Jurgen and Marianna within the space of half an hour. Then we checked where our room for the night was, back at the bottom of the stairs near the river!

After a rest we went sightseeing. When we first started the walk we did no sightseeing. We were so tired by the time we reached anywhere that we just rested. Now we set off back up the hill again to look at the towns castle steps, all that is left of the original castle. Sorely disappointed ! No access to see them snd they are falling down. A missed opportunity.

But we found a goat, the Holy Goat as Robin christened him, that made us laugh.

I had found a recommended restaurant for the evening so we went there later on. We looked at the menu but couldn’t recognise the dish I had seen a picture of and they didn’t speak much English, so I showed them the picture. It wasn’t on the menu but they could make it if we wanted 1200gm of steak. We said yes!!

It was great and we ate it all and then rolled home!
