I have been worrying about the subject for my first presentation and essay - the brief is aspects of changes that have taken place in the environment, linked with those organisations and legislation that have been involved in such changes. That is a wide brief!
Finally today I decided on hedgerows - we have lost half our hedgerows in England since the war - approximately 500,000km. Hedgerows are great boundaries but they are much more than that - they provide habitats for wildlife and plants - including many of our native at-risk species, they provide wildlife corridors, they are a key part of our traditional English landscape and to some extent they also provide carbon sequestration. More information at www.hedgelink.org.uk Its a starting point for an essay - will let you know how it goes.
The picture does show a hedge (mainly hawthorn and ivy) but its actually to show you my back garden at the cottage. Its bigger than my garden at home - so much could be done with it! But as university accommodation I feel lucky that someone cut the grass!
